1. A Reliable computer – remote work requires reliable equipment. This doesn’t need to be the most expensive laptop or a Mac equipped to the max. It should be, however, a robust machine with enough memory, processing speed, and capability of using several apps at once.

2. Nonstop connectivity – You will need a fast, dependable internet connection. This enables you to check in with clients or your employer at any time to communicate and exchange information.

3. Ethernet capability – While Wi-Fi is convenient, access to a direct, Ethernet connection improves security. Some clients will require that you work via Ethernet. It’s good practice to use it to safeguard the services you provide.

4. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) – Many remote working opportunities ask for you to use VoIP technology. A dedicated phone line is useful, though VoIP may be provided via an application on your computer.

5. Monitor – Many remote workers like to use a large monitor that is easy on their eyes. If you have a laptop, it will have a relatively small screen for portability. As a remote worker, you can benefit from a larger, external monitor so you can work more comfortably. This can boost your productivity and not stress your eyes.

6. Laptop rest – A laptop rest can make you more comfortable at your desk. This will help you maintain good posture and avoid straining your fingers. It’s also wise to invest in a comfortable chair, one with a contoured back. And consider performing exercises to keep your body and mind healthy while performing sedentary work.

7. Webcam – Some clients will want to see you from time to time. A webcam is an inexpensive tech that enables you to check-in face-to-face with teammates, clients or employers. When on, just be attuned to what you wear and what’s in the background.

8. Headset – A quality headset with a microphone is useful when communicating online. Buy wisely and don’t scrimp with a cheap one, which won’t be comfortable.

9. Anti-malware or antivirus software – As remote working becomes more the norm, cybersecurity increases in importance. It protects you, your operations, and clients. Installing the latest antivirus and anti-malware technology gives you and your clients peace of mind.

10. Cloud – Cloud technology can help you share documents and other files you need for work. Instructions and completed tasks can be sent to and retrieved from cloud storage via an application, such as Dropbox. The cloud makes it easier for those working from home to collaborate with others, wherever they are and in whatever time zone.
