5 Ways to Improve Your Work-from-home Balance

3.5-minute read

Respect Your Boundaries

When you have created your workspace and work time, you need to enforce those boundaries. For a better balance, it’s critical not to let homelife time creep into work time, and vice versa.

One of the best ways to do this is to respect your own rules. If you live with other people, they will see that you are dedicated to focused work time. This will make it easier for them to understand that you cannot be interrupted while working.

At the same time, we would urge you to respect your homelife. Having downtime is necessary for your mental and physical health. And honoring your homelife schedule also will help others understand they will have access to you, if they can be patient.

Take Care of Yourself

With regular self-care, you can help make your work-from-home balance sustainable. The idea is not to overdo it at the home office, despite temptation. As your own office manager, ensure that you follow the 20-20-20 rule—take 20 seconds to focus 20 feet away every 20 minutes.

You may have everything you need within reach, so make sure you get up and keep your body moving. Enjoy a break activity or take a walk. Breaks and exercise will sharpen the mind and the body.

Make Your Balance Second Nature

One of the most important things to appreciate is that achieving a work/home balance does not happen overnight. Some would say it is a constant process of evolution. It’s definitely more about the journey than the destination.

Tweak your workday frequently in response to changes, whether they are internal or external. Some days will be better than others. Learn from what you did right. Examine days that were not so productive or fulfilling to improve on them.

An excellent work/life balance takes discipline and persistence, but the rewards are plentiful. You can look forward to a more productive workday, more relaxation and better relationships. Use our five tips every day to achieve and maintain your ideal work/life balance.
